WHAT IS 3x3 BASKETBALL?

3x3 Basketball (pronounced “three-ex-three”) is a fast-paced, high-energy variation of traditional basketball that’s taking the world by storm.

The game is played on a half-court with one basket, and each team is made up of four players — three on the court and one substitute. Games are short, intense, and packed with action:

The first team to score 21 points — or lead at the end of 10 minutes — wins the game.

A 12-second shot clock keeps the tempo fast and exciting

The ball is a size 6 with the weight of a size 7, designed for speed and precision.

A coin toss determines which team starts with possession.

Shots taken inside the arc are worth 1 point, and shots taken behind the arc are worth 2 points.

It’s fast, fierce, and growing worldwide — and it’s changing the game for the next generation.

Unlike traditional 5-on-5 basketball, 3x3 is all about speed, skill, and intensity — making it thrilling for both players and fans. It’s not just a game; it’s a global movement that’s now part of the Olympic program, inspiring youth around the world.

When and Where Did 3×3 Basketball Start?

While informal half-court games have been played for decades in neighborhoods and parks around the world, 3×3 basketball was officially formalized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in 2007.

It made its international debut at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and has grown rapidly ever since.

A major milestone came in 2020, when 3×3 Basketball was officially included in the Olympic Games held in Tokyo — cementing its place on the world stage.

Today, 3×3 is one of the fastest-growing urban sports globally. It features its own professional circuit (the FIBA 3×3 World Tour), national team competitions, and youth development programs.

The sport is celebrated for its speed, accessibility, and global appeal, embraced by both grassroots and elite players. Whether played on outdoor courts in bustling city plazas or under arena lights at international tournaments, 3×3 has carved out a unique place in the basketball world.

Benefits of Playing 3×3 Basketball

– Faster Development: With fewer players on the court, every touch matters. Players get more ball time, more scoring opportunities, and more chances to make smart decisions — accelerating growth and sharpening skills fast.

– Improved Conditioning: The high tempo and non-stop action build stamina, agility, and endurance — making athletes stronger, faster, and more explosive.

– Better Decision-Making: In 3×3, every second counts. Players learn to read the game quickly, adapt on the fly, and make confident choices under pressure.

– Teamwork and Communication:  Success in 3×3 depends on chemistry, quick communication, and trust. It builds leadership, collaboration, and strong on-court bonds.

– Accessibility: All you need is a hoop and six players. 3×3 is easy to organize, fun to play, and perfect for any community setting — from neighborhood playgrounds to world stages.

Why the Youth Should Embrace 3×3 Basketball?

3×3 Basketball gives today’s youth a powerful platform to build their skills, confidence, and leadership — both on and off the court.

It’s a fast, dynamic, and engaging sport that not only develops physical fitness but also sharpens teamwork, strategic thinking, and mental toughness. By getting involved in 3×3, young people gain the tools to succeed in sports — and in life.

On the court, they build confidence and form real friendships. Off the court, they learn responsibility, discipline, and what it means to be part of a strong community.

Because 3×3 is officially recognized by FIBA and the Olympic Games, it opens doors to elite competition, international opportunities, and personal growth.

🚀 The future of basketball is fast, fierce, and full of opportunity — and youth are at the heart of it.
